Google’s former CEO Eric Schmidt has a DeepSeek warning for the US

Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO, has cautioned Western nations about the need to invest in open-source artificial intelligence models, warning they risk falling behind China in the global AI race, a report has said.

“If we don’t do something about that, China will ultimately become the open-source leader and the rest of the world will become closed-source,” Schmidt told the Financial Times, while pointing out that most leading US LLMs, including Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, and OpenAI’s GPT-4, are closed (not freely accessible), with Meta’s Llama being a notable exception.
