Meta to scrap fact-checking, introduces ‘Community Notes’ for users to flag misleading posts

Meta is ending its fact-checking program in the US and replacing it with a new “Community Notes” system, the company announced on Tuesday (January 7). This move mirrors a similar initiative seen on X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk.

The new system will empower users on Meta’s platforms—Facebook, Instagram, and Threads—to flag posts that may be misleading or lack proper context, shifting the responsibility for content moderation away from independent fact-checking organizations and experts.
