Government sends notice to WhatsApp after ‘scam alarm’ from telecom regulator TRAI

The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has reportedly urged Meta Platforms, the parent company of WhatsApp, to address scams originating on the messaging platform. This follows a request from India’s telecom regulator for intervention. According to an Economic Times report quoting MeitY secretary S. Krishnan, the ministry is actively addressing the issue with Meta. “This is an ongoing process. Scammers will always find new ways, which is a cause for concern,” Krishnan told ET.
