Donald Trump’s pick for FCC may do to TikTok what India did in 2020
US’ President-elect Donald Trump’s choice of Brendan Carr to lead the Federal Communications Commission signals a potential repeat of India’s sudden 2020 TikTok prohibition, which saw 200 million users cut off from the platform overnight.
Carr, who authored the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 chapter on the FCC, has explicitly called for banning TikTok despite Trump’s recent opposition to such action. The incoming chair views the platform as “a serious and unacceptable risk to America’s national security,” arguing it enables Beijing to conduct influence operations through content manipulation.
