When and why Amazon is shutting down Freevee, its free ad-supported video streaming service
Amazon is officially shutting down Freevee, its free, ad-supported video streaming service originally launched under the IMDB brand nearly five years ago. Freevee will be phased out over the course of the next several weeks. Going forward, content that had been on the service will move to Amazon’s Prime Video brand.
Under CEO Andy Jassy, Amazon has been on a cost-cutting drive that has shut down dozens of duplicative or unprofitable initiatives, from a would-be home delivery robot to niche cloud-computing services. He’s also closely examined some of the company’s big-spending divisions, including its devices business and Amazon Studios.
