Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced that it will lift its blanket ban on the Arabic word “Shaheed,” which translates to “martyr” in English. This decision comes after a yearlong review by Meta’s independently operating oversight board, which found that the company’s previous approach was overly restrictive1.
The controversy stems from Meta’s handling of content related to the Middle East.
