OTT should not be regulated

Indian Broadcasting and Digital Foundation doesn’t want over the top (OTT) to be put under the purview of the New Broadcasting Policy (NBP), 2024. The industry association asserts that broadcasting is a one way transmission service and equating broadcasting with OTTs is fundamentally flawed.

The association also said the present consultation paper goes beyond the power and remit of Trai which has consistently taken a stand in various explanatory memoranda to the regulations, consultation papers, etc., that regulation of content is beyond the scope and power of Authority.

The emerging industry like OTTs needs minimal government or regulatory intervention and the policies on OTTs content regulation should not create unnecessary hurdles. The balance needs to be struck between the government’s regulatory
