Google India app row: IAMAI warns tech giant against ‘delisting’ apps from Play Store
The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) issued a statement advising Google against delisting any apps from Google Play Store, on Friday. This comes after Google’s warning that it would remove apps not complying with Play Store billing policies.
IAMAI confirmed that at least four of its members have received notices from Google, urging the tech giant to refrain from taking coercive action during the pendency of a substantive hearing before the Supreme Court of India.
Google, in response, emphasised its commitment to enforcing its billing norms, highlighting that several companies, including established ones, have chosen not to comply with the Play Store billing policies, despite the support extended by the platform to over 200,000 Indian developers who do adhere to these policies. It warned that it would take necessary action, including removing non-compliant apps from Google Play.
Google justified its stance by stating that differential treatment for a select group of developers creates an unfair playing field, disadvantaging other developers and apps.
Despite giving developers ample time to comply, Google stated that it would ensure consistent application of its policies across the ecosystem. It clarified that enforcement could involve the removal of non-compliant apps but assured existing users of uninterrupted access.
Google also offered support to developers to help them achieve compliance, welcoming them to resubmit their apps with one of the three billing options outlined in its payment policy.
The tech giant highlighted the vast number of Indian developers adhering to its policies, contributing to a safe platform on Google Play Store. However, it noted that some companies, despite benefiting from the platform’s value, have chosen not to pay, seeking interim protections from the court. This statement reflects Google’s firm stance on enforcing its policies while also encouraging compliance among developers.
