Dish Wireless, Vodafone integrate VMware telco services in networks
US mobile operator Dish Wireless and Britain’s Vodafone are integrating Broadcom-acquired VMware’s telecom services into their respective networks.
VMware said on Thursday that Dish has deployed the VMware Telco Cloud Service Assurance across its cloud-native 5G network in a pilot environment.
Dish runs its network traffic on a multi-vendor, cloud-native environment and to date has launched more than 20,000 5G sites. VMware said its solution is playing a crucial role in enabling the telco to manage its multi-vendor environments and help improve network operations and efficiency.
“DISH Wireless runs its network traffic in a multi-vendor, cloud-native environment and has launched more than 20,000 5G sites to date,” said Eben Albertyn, EVP and Chief Technology Officer, Dish Wireless. “VMware Telco Cloud Service Assurance provides visibility and actionable insights to help manage and operate our network effectively.”
Dish is running its network on Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) gear from South Korea’s Samsung and US-based Mavenir.
On the other hand, Vodafone and VMware, under a proof-of-concept (PoC), are applying network programmability and intelligence into the radio access network (RAN) as part of their collaboration to address network challenges caused by short-video content.
“Vodafone continues to collaborate with VMware, and now Broadcom, to drive greater interoperability, innovation, and improvements in the RAN with VMware RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC),” said Santiago Tenorio, Vodafone’s Director of Network Architecture. “The two companies have worked together on the integration of network intelligence and programmability to provide real-time control over our network APIs with the aim of improving the overall customer experience for all customers, including those wishing to consume short-form videos.”
