Airtel MD Gopal Vittal urges consumers to use e-SIM; says tech can make stolen smartphones easier to track
Bharti Airtel, which is aggressively rolling out its 5G Plus network in the country, said its eSIM can enable seamless connectivity on all devices, and also make it easier for users to track their stolen smartphones.
An embedded SIM or eSIM eliminates the need for a physical SIM card on a device. Today, some smartwatches and newer models of smartphones are e-SIM enabled.
“In these times of digital-first lifestyles, where mobiles, tablets and watches are all interconnected, the e-SIM will provide seamless connectivity for you,” Airtel CEO & MD Gopal Vittal said in an emailed statement to the telecom operator’s customers on Tuesday.
ETTelecom has reviewed the email.
“For instance, you will be able to go for a morning jog and not carry your phone along since the e-SIM will enable connectivity on your smartwatch while your phone sits by your bedside at home and you enjoy your run,” Vittal said.
The Airtel MD said it will also be possible for users to use multiple mobile numbers on a single e-SIM, should they choose to do so. “It is also very easy to change devices with an e-SIM.”
He stressed that in instances of theft, it will be harder for criminals to get rid of the eSIM “since they are unlike the traditional SIMs that could be physically removed from phones”. Vittal added this will make a lost smartphone easier to track.
“We have tried to make the switch to an e-SIM as seamless as possible for you,” he said.
According to Vittal, all devices that support eSIM are also compatible with Airtel eSIM. Besides, it is also easy to convert a physical SIM into an e-SIM through the Airtel Thanks app. Once the eSIM profile is downloaded and enabled, it is activated on the device for connectivity services.
“As I said, we at Airtel want to do everything we can to ensure that you have as convenient and efficient a connectivity experience as possible,” Vittal said.
