China’s Alibaba takes on tech giants Google, Microsoft with new, improved AI model
Chinese tech giant Alibaba has launched a new AI model called Tongyi Qianwen 2.0. The company claims it to be more powerful and versatile than the similar AI models created by US tech giants like Meta, Amazon and Microsoft. The Tongyi Qianwen 2.0 along with new industry-specific models was announced by Alibaba at its annual flagship tech event Apsara Conference.
“Currently, 80% of China’s technology companies and half of large model companies run on Alibaba Cloud. We aim to be the most open cloud in the era of AI. We hope that through this cloud, it will become easier and affordable for everyone to develop and use AI, so we can help, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, to turn AI into huge productivity,” said Joe Tsai, Chairman of Alibaba Group at the event.
Tongyi Qianwen 2.0 is a more advanced version of a large language model with a lot of parameters. It’s better than the previous version which was launched in April, and it performs really well in various tasks like understanding language, solving math problems, and answering questions, claims the company.
This new version has a bigger model and some improved techniques, which make it great at understanding complicated instructions, writing content, thinking logically, remembering information, and avoiding making things up. The company informed us that now anyone can use it on their website or mobile apps, and developers can access it through APIs.
Tongyi Qianwen 2.0 is trained on both Chinese and English text, which gives it a unique advantage in global markets. The company claims Tongyi Qianwen 2.0 to be more efficient and cost-effective to use than other LLMs, making it more accessible to businesses of all sizes.
The launch of Tongyi Qianwen 2.0 is a challenge to Meta, Amazon and Microsoft, which are the current leaders in the global cloud computing market. These companies have also been investing heavily in AI research and development, but Alibaba’s new model could give it a significant advantage in some key areas.
For example, Tongyi Qianwen 2.0 is said to be more efficient and cost-effective to use than other LLMs. This could make it more attractive to businesses that are looking to adopt AI technology.
Additionally, the fact that Tongyi Qianwen 2.0 is trained on both Chinese and English text could give Alibaba an advantage in global markets. China is the world’s largest e-commerce market, and Alibaba is already the dominant player in that market. Tongyi Qianwen 2.0 could help Alibaba further expand its reach into other global markets.
