Six telecom companies owe AMC 2.2 crore

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is yet to recover Rs 2.21 crore in taxes from six telecommunication service providers. The AMC also announced that it will accept Rs 2,000 notes in payments for property or other taxes.

Jainik Vakil, chairman of the AMC revenue committee, said six telecom companies have a huge sum due and notices have been issued to them. He said the AMC will take up a drive to recover dues from all defaulters. The AMC will take measures against defaulting businesses in the hospitality, IT, finance, construction and retail sectors, and will issue final notices for recovery.

He said, “Among the six companies, the highest amount, Rs 1 crore, is to recovered from Reliance Communications, followed by Rs 44.19 lakh from Tata Teleservices, Rs 44.07 lakh from Gujarat Telelink, Rs 16.03 lakh from Bharti Airtel, Rs 9.76 lakh from Idea and Rs 6.95 lakh from Vodafone.”

Vakil said the corporation has made it clear that unless these companies pay their dues, the AMC will not give them road opening permits. The chairman said that from February 14 to April 30, the AMC had announced its one-time settlement scheme and has so far collected Rs 700 crore in taxes. Tax realization figures reached record levels in the first two months of the financial year 2023-24.

Vakil further said that the advance property tax window with rebates of 12% to 15% opened on April 18, and the advance property tax scheme got a good response. So far, 37% of property owners have paid their taxes in advance.

The AMC collected Rs 663.38 crore in taxes in just 47 days of the 2023-24 financial year. Property tax accounts for Rs 602.47 crore of this.
