India’s global ranking in median mobile speeds jumps 10 spots in January 2023: Ookla
India’s global ranking in the median mobile speeds jumped ten spots from 79 in December 2022 to 69 in January 2023, showing a remarkable improvement over the past two months, according to the latest insights from internet testing firm Ookla released Monday.
Ookla recorded 29.85Mbps median mobile download speeds in January this year which it described as better than 25.29Mbps in December 2022.
The increase in median mobile speeds coincides with the Indian telecom operators Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel’s aggressive 5G rollout strategy. Both telcos have covered over 230 and 100 cities with their 5G services, respectively, and aim to complete the roll out within 15 months.
On median fixed broadband speeds, India increased by two spots in rank from 81 in December to 79 in January. India’s performance in fixed median download speeds witnessed a slight increase from 49.14Mbps in December to 50.02Mbps in January 2023.
According to the Ookla report, UAE leads the chart for overall global median mobile speeds, whereas Papua New Guinea increased 24 spots in rank globally. For fixed broadband download speeds, Singapore is consistently at the number one spot this month as well and Cyprus increased 20 spots in rank globally.
