IMEI

To counter the tampering and rampant cloning and theft of mobile phones in the country, on September 26, 2022 the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a notification that mandates registration of IMEI number of all the mobile handsets made in India. The phones imported for the sale, testing, and research are also required to be registered before importing of the equipment. The notified rules come into force immediately for imported phones, while the mobile phone manufacturers in India have been given time till January 1, 2023 for compulsory registration.
