61% users in under Rs30k segment upgrade smartphone every year for better performance: Techarc

61% of surveyed users in the under Rs 30,000 price segment upgrade their smartphone every year or earlier to seek better performance, while about 33% of such users change their smartphones once every six months, according to findings by Techarc.

The findings observed that the price-to-performance ratio of smartphones is declining, even as users want better-performing devices at an affordable price.

“Under Rs 30k smartphone segment has reached a level of saturation, it is craving for innovation and cutting edge performance,” Techarc said in its findings released Wednesday.

86% of the surveyed respondents agreed that “best-in-class” performance should be affordable, in contrast, 84% affirmed that smartphones with “good performance” should come at a premium price.

A majority of respondents (60%) further noted that there is no disruptive smartphone like OnePlus One, Poco F1, Redmi K20, and K20 Pro priced below Rs 30,000.

In essence, users seek high-end specifications at affordable prices and are willing to pay a premium for a better user interface (UI) as well as processor.

The top five features that users prioritize in their next smartphone, as per the report, include a 144Hz display refresh rate, flagship processor, fast charging, 12GB RAM, and 256GB ROM, respectively.

“Over the past few years, the segment [Rs 30,000] has peaked in terms of innovation, and we can see most of the launches reaching a saturation level resulting in increasing disappointment upon usage,” said Faisal Kawoosa, Founder and Chief Analyst, Techarc. “The present user considers performance among top influencing factors during the purchase, however, it’s the 2nd biggest challenge in terms of issues they face with the current devices that the users are owing within this segment.”
